Dear JPE1100Bers,

Here is a sample dialogue on our quiz on Friday.

Write dialogues for the following situations, following the cues provided. DO NOT translate the cues. Just use them as general guidelines for the conversations.

You are supposed to meet Mr. Yamashita for the first time at a hotel lobby.

You see a man who is also looking for someone, so you approach him and ask whether he is Mr. Yamashita.
Sumimasen, Yamashita-san desu ka.
(Excuse me, are you Mr. Yamashita?)

The man says he is not.
Iie.
(No.)

You apologize.
Shitsuree shimashita.
(I'm sorry.)

In the meantime, a different man approaches you and asks if you are (your name).
Sumimasen, Seo-san (or Your name) desu ka.
(Excuse me, are you Mr. Seo?)

You answers yes and asks the man if he is Mr. Yamashita from Tokyo University.
Hai, soo desu. Tokyo Daigaku no Yamashita-san desu ka.
(Yes, I am. Are you Mr. Yamashita from Tokyo University?)

The man says he is Mr. Yamashita and greets you
Hai, Yamashita desu. Hajime mashite. Doozo Yoroshiku.
(Yes, I am Yamashita. Nice to see you.)

You return the greeting and say, “Nice to meet you.”
Hajime mashite. Doozo Yoroshiku.
